Bodybuilding & SteroidsBodybuilding & Weight Training GuideIt is fair to say that steroid use among competitive bodybuilders is a common thing. In fact, other than the branch of natural bodybuilding, almost all competitive bodybuilders have tried steroids at some point. However, with the growing storm over the steroid controversy in baseball and other pro sports, a negative public opinion against the use of steroids has developed. It is also important to remember that anabolic steroids are a controlled substance, and are illegal to have or distribute. Steroids are relatively simple organic molecules that have important chemical functions in the human body. They are the hormones that act as chemical messengers and are produced by the endocrine system. The most well known are the sex hormones, mainly testosterone in males and estrogen in females. It is the testosterone that allows men to build and develop muscles. Synthetic anabolic steroids are designed to mimic the function of testosterone. In some cases, they perform better at promoting muscle growth than equivalent levels of testosterone. Perhaps the most well known of the anabolic steroids is Stanozol and its related Winstrol. Winstrol is derived from dihydrotestoserone, or DHT, which is the most potent form of testosterone. Winstrol can be taken either orally or by injection, with different advantages and disadvantages to each. Oral steroids are easier to use, especially for anyone scared of needles. Also, since steroids are illegal, it is not possible to get a doctor to inject you. Thus you need to be concerned with safe injection practices, including always using clean needles and never sharing your needles with anyone. There are too many diseases that are present in all communities, including the bodybuilding fraternity, to risk sharing a needle with anyone. Oral steroids suffer from having to pass through the gut and intestines before being absorbed into the blood stream. Also, when taken this way, steroids must pass through the liver, and this leads to liver toxicity. Injected steroids are put directly into the blood stream, making them far easier on your liver. There are some indications that oral steroids can gain effectiveness through their ability to decrease the level of sex hormone binding globulin, a glycoprotein that traps testosterone. SHBG is produced in the liver, and also binds with Winstrol when administered orally. This serves to increase the level of free testosterone in the body, which can be used for muscle growth. There are many negative side effects to steroid use. These include hirutism, or unwanted hair growth on areas like the back or for women, the face; hair loss typical of male pattern baldness; a thickening of the vocal cords leading to a deep and raspy voice; and acne. Steroid use also coincides with a dramatic increase in bad cholesterol levels and can lower sperm count. Perhaps, the worst mistake the most steroid users make is to become steroid abusers. It is very common to overuse steroids, creating a whole range of health problems. It is important to remember when considering taking steroids to do as much research as possible.
